Jorge Fonseca (FAO) – The consumer has the power to change the unsustainability of our food system

He’s an expert in food science and technology, packaging science, horticulture, agronomy, business administration, marketing and food governance and society. He has authored over 150 scientific and technical publications that address different aspects of food systems, particularly targeting issues of interest for the agri-food industries.

Fonseca was one of the professors of EIT Climate-KIC’s two-week PhD Autumn school on Sustainable Land Use in 2018 that took place in Budapest and Valencia. Here he discusses with EIT Climate-KIC Spain the complex problem of transitioning global food systems and the power of the consumer, making this transition a priority within the sustainable development goals, maintaining biodiversity and food security, reducing food waste, boosting nutrition education, supporting climate-smart approaches to agriculture, shortening food chains, and balancing rural and urban economic growth.
